It depends, in state of emergency, terrorism, or serial killers, wouldn't be a bad idea to keep it, however, for common crimes, even blood and violent ones, long sentences are often tougher. As I said, it depends on the number of victims, the intention of the crime (terrorism, ethnic cleansing...) and how dangerous the criminal is for other convicts and society in general.
